Start Point

One of Guyana’s premier freshwater fisheries, accessed the way it should be accessed.

The Rewa River remains one of Guyana’s premier freshwater fishing destinations. Reached by boat through the Rupununi River system, this 6-day expedition takes anglers into remote Amazon waters with limited outside pressure and a remarkable diversity of target species.

The journey begins at Kwatamang Landing, where the team loads boats and travels upriver into the Rewa River system. From there, the expedition moves through rainforest, setting mobile river camps and fishing a range of habitats including deep channels, river bends, submerged timber, structure-rich banks, and oxbow lakes when conditions allow.

This is not a lodge-based fishing holiday. It is a stripped-back jungle fishing expedition where guests travel, camp, and fish alongside Indigenous fishing guides. Camp life is simple, practical, and collaborative. Meals are prepared over open fire, often featuring freshly caught fish alongside traditional forest dishes.

Fishing locations and techniques are adapted daily according to water levels, weather, river flow, fish behaviour, and guide recommendations. The aim is not comfort for comfort’s sake. The aim is access — reaching productive water that most visiting anglers will never see.

This expedition is best suited for anglers who value serious fishing, remote water, simple camp life, and the chance to experience one of the least pressured river systems in the Amazon basin.

“The Rewa is one of those river systems that still feels like fishing should feel. You are not based in a lodge waiting for the river to come to you. You move with the guides, follow the water, set camp where it makes sense, and fish the structure, oxbows, bends, and channels that are producing at that moment. It is simple, honest fishing in a place where access still has to be earned, and that is exactly why it can be so good.”

What sets this apart

The reasons anglers choose this expedition when they want access over luxury.

Indigenous Fishing Guides

Fish with local Indigenous guides who understand the Rewa River system, seasonal water movement, fish behaviour, river structure, and where to focus each day.

Multi-Species Fishing

Target Peacock Bass, Payara, Arowana, Black Piranha, Tiger Catfish, Redtail Catfish, and other tropical freshwater species depending on season and conditions.

Arapaima Option

Arapaima fishing may be available under local village conservation guidelines. This is fly fishing only and requires a separate permit and gear arrangement.

Oxbow Lake Access

When water levels allow, access oxbow lakes by repositioning boats through shallow entry points, reaching calm and productive water rarely disturbed by outside anglers.

Mobile River Camps

No fixed lodge. Camps move along the river as the expedition progresses, allowing the team to fish different sections and follow the best available conditions.

Lightly Pressured Water

The Rewa remains one of Guyana’s least pressured fishing systems, offering access to waters that are difficult to reach and rarely fished by visitors.

Highlights

A glimpse into the river, the species, and the rhythm that defines this expedition.

Hook A Peacock Bass

Cast for Lukunani in remote river sections where explosive strikes, hard fights, and structure-based fishing define the experience. Buckle up for action!

Cast For Arapaima

Where available under village conservation rules, fly fish for one of the world’s largest freshwater fish in one of the few legal Arapaima fisheries in the region.

Eat What You Catch

Enjoy expedition-style riverbank meals cooked over open fire, often including freshly caught fish prepared alongside traditional forest dishes.

Push Into An Oxbow

Help guides reposition boats through shallow oxbow entrances to reach stillwater habitats where predators sit away from the main river current.

DETAILS

Everything you need to know
before booking your adventure
Day 1

Arrival Kwatamang
Arrive at Kwatamang Landing and meet the fishing team. After a full safety briefing and orientation, boats are loaded and the expedition travels through the Rupununi River system toward the Rewa. By afternoon, camp is established on the riverbank and the first fishing session begins.

Day 2-5

Fishing on Rewa River
Four full days are dedicated to fishing the Rewa River system. Each day is shaped around water levels, fish activity, weather, and guide recommendations. The team targets river bends, submerged timber, deep channels, structure-rich banks, and oxbow lakes when conditions allow. Camps may shift along the river to keep the group close to productive fishing grounds.

Evenings are spent in simple river camps, with meals prepared over fire and time to fish from camp or relax along the river. Wildlife sightings may include giant otters, caiman, monkeys, macaws, and river birds.

Day 6

Rock Landing Training Camp
Boats are loaded early and the expedition returns down the Rewa and Rupununi river systems to Kwatamang Landing. The trip concludes at Kwatamang, where onward travel arrangements continue.

Basic spinning gear is included for the expedition. Guests are also welcome to bring their own rods, reels, lures, leaders, tackle, and preferred fishing equipment. Fly fishing is possible, especially for guests interested in the Arapaima option. Arapaima fishing is strictly fly fishing only and is managed under local village conservation rules. A separate Arapaima permit fee applies, and fly fishing gear rental can be arranged at an additional daily cost. Guests bringing specialist fishing gear should also bring spare tackle, leaders, hooks, lures, and any preferred replacements, as the expedition operates far from shops and resupply. The Rewa River system may produce Peacock Bass, Payara, Arowana, Black Piranha, Tiger Catfish, Redtail Catfish, and other tropical freshwater species. Fishing success and target species vary with water levels, season, weather, and river conditions. Arapaima may be available as a separate fly fishing option under local conservation guidelines.
The expedition starts and ends at Kwatamang Landing in the North Rupununi. Guests can arrange their own travel to Kwatamang or request add-on logistics through The Wild Tales. Access options may include overland transfer from Lethem, domestic flights from Georgetown to Lethem, charter flights to Annai, or charter flights to Apoteri for faster river access. These options can be arranged individually or built into a wider itinerary. The Rewa is a remote jungle river system. Guests should expect heat, humidity, insects, changing river conditions, simple camps, and active boat travel. This trip is best suited for anglers who are comfortable with expedition-style conditions and value access over comfort.
