Start Point

A classic Guyana expedition through mountains, river, rainforest, and savanna.

The Kanuku Mountains & Rupununi Wildlife Expedition is a 13-day exploration-style journey through four distinct ecosystems of Guyana: rainforest, mountain, river, and savanna. It follows old trails, river routes, and community pathways through landscapes long associated with early explorers and the legend of El Dorado.

Led by experienced Indigenous Makushi guides and The Wild Tales expedition team, the journey begins in the foothills of the Kanuku Mountains. Days are spent trekking through pristine rainforest, following trails known by local hunters, crossing creeks, and camping beside waterfalls. This is the expedition phase: simple camps, forest travel, wildlife signs, river crossings, and nights surrounded by the sound of the jungle.

From the mountains, the route continues to Mapari Wilderness Camp, one of the most atmospheric remote camps in the Rupununi. Here the pace slows slightly, allowing time for forest walks, fishing, river drifts, waterfall swims, wildlife observation, and night walks. This is where guests begin to understand the depth of the Kanuku landscape — not just as scenery, but as living country.

The final phase shifts from forest and river into savanna. At Yupukari and Caiman House Research Station, guests take part in wildlife-focused activities such as black caiman research, giant anteater tracking, oxbow lake visits, river exploration, and time in Makushi community life. The journey ends with the open light of the Rupununi Savannah — a powerful contrast to the deep green of the Kanukus.

This is not a luxury itinerary and it is not a single-activity tour. It is a complete cross-section of wild Guyana: trekking, wildlife, rivers, communities, research, savanna, and forest camps in one continuous expedition.

“The Kanuku and Rupununi route is one of the most complete journeys we can offer in Guyana. It is not only about trekking, and it is not only about wildlife. You move through the country properly, forest trails, mountain creeks, river camps, research stations, savanna roads, and Indigenous communities. By the end, you haven’t just visited one beautiful place. You’ve seen how the whole landscape connects.”

Mapari Wilderness Camp

Two flexible days deep in the Kanukus at Mapari Wilderness Camp, with forest hikes, fishing, river drifts, waterfall swims, night walks, and meals overlooking the creek.

Caiman House Research Station

Stay in Yupukari and join conservation-focused activities linked to black caiman research, oxbow lakes, river wildlife, giant anteater tracking, and Makushi community life.

El Dorado Landscapes

The journey moves through country associated with old exploration routes and the legend of El Dorado, not as theatre, but as real landscape, crossed by boat, on foot, and by trail.

Porter Option Available

Porters can be added to the team at an additional cost during the trekking phase, allowing guests to reduce personal load and focus more on the forest, wildlife, and journey itself.

The journey is suitable for active travellers with average fitness. It is not technically difficult, but guests should be comfortable with multi-day trekking, humidity, uneven ground, river travel, basic camps, and long travel days.
The expedition starts and ends in Georgetown, Guyana. Domestic flights connect Georgetown with Lethem, followed by overland and river transport through the Rupununi. The best operating windows are generally January to April and September to early December, when conditions are more stable for trekking, river travel, and wildlife activity. Rain can occur at any time. Guests should bring lightweight quick-dry clothing, sturdy trekking footwear, insect protection, headlamp, personal medication, camera equipment, and a flexible mindset. A full packing list is provided after booking. Porters can be arranged during the trekking phase at additional cost.
