Start Point

A deep dive into the traditional jungle skills that have sustained forest people for generations, taught in the rainforest where they belong.

Join this 13-day Jungle Bushcraft Course in Guyana and experience life in one of the world’s most biodiverse rainforests. Developed in partnership with Back to Wilderness UK and expert instructors from the Makushi community, this course goes beyond general survival training. It is a practical introduction to traditional forest craft, resource use, and jungle living.

You will handcraft your own bow and arrows, weave traditional rucksacks, light fires using natural materials, learn machete techniques, identify useful forest resources, fish, cook, travel, and live in the rainforest. Throughout the course, you work side by side with Indigenous instructors and international bushcraft experts in both training camps and remote expedition-style camps.

No prior experience is required. The course is designed for bushcraft enthusiasts, nature lovers, cultural explorers, adventure travellers, and anyone who wants to learn practical jungle skills in the environment where they still matter.

“The Jungle Bushcraft Course came from repeated requests for a programme focused entirely on skills: fire, tools, natural materials, fishing, weaving, camp craft, and traditional forest knowledge. We wanted to create a course where Makushi instructors could teach these skills in their proper environment while also placing that knowledge inside a recognised certification framework for people serious about learning real jungle bushcraft.”

Under Makushi instructors and international bushcraft experts, you’ll learn hammock and tarp setup, fire-lighting with natural materials, safe machete use, fishing, and bow-and-arrow making. Each day focuses on a different element of jungle living — resource identification, trap setting, rope-making, camp hygiene.

Day 13

Departure

Handcrafting your own bow and arrows. Weaving traditional rucksacks from bush rope. Fire-lighting using natural materials. Advanced machete techniques for hillside and jungle terrain. Fishing — spearfishing, hook methods, traps. Trap setting for small game. Shelter construction from forest materials. Resource identification — edible plants, medicinal plants, fruits, palm hearts. Camp hygiene and safe tool work. Rope-making from natural fibers. Night wildlife identification. Cooking wild food over fire.
Average fitness is sufficient — expect long training days in humid conditions. Hot and humid year-round. Dry season (Jan–Apr, Sep–Nov) offers easier travel. Wet season brings more rain and mud, but the rainforest at its richest. Personal travel insurance is mandatory; get in touch for provider recommendations. The course runs year-round and can accommodate mixed-experience groups.
