AN INDIGENOUS-LED ATTEMPT ON WOKOMUNG TEPUI — WHERE THE ROUTE IS STILL BEING FOUND.

“This expedition has changed in the best possible way. It started as a mission to reach King Edward VIII Falls, but the route has grown into something bigger. The falls are still the anchor, but now we are looking beyond them, into the surrounding country, the river systems, the ridges, the old routes, and the places that still do not belong on a public map. We will not publish every objective, because a real expedition still needs mystery, respect, and careful planning. Guests should join ready for uncertainty, teamwork, hard movement, and the possibility that the best part of the journey is something we only understand once we are out there.”

This is a classical Wild Tales expedition: raw, remote, physical, uncertain, and deeply immersive. There are no lodges once the expedition enters the interior, no marked trail, and no fixed tourist route. The plan gives us direction, but the forest, river, weather, and guides will shape the final decisions.

For those ready for one of the wildest overland expeditions in Guyana, this is the one.

“This is not a mountain you simply book, climb, and tick off. Wokomung is different. The route is still being understood, the forest is heavy, the terrain is steep, and every decision depends on the mountain, the guides, and the conditions in front of us. That is exactly what makes it special. Guests joining this expedition should come ready to carry weight, work as a team, and accept that success may mean reaching the summit, or it may mean helping open, document, and understand a route that few outsiders have ever walked.”

What sets this apart

Six reasons this expedition earns its name.

Wokomung Tepui

This expedition is built around one of Guyana’s great Pakaraima table mountains. Wokomung rises above Kopinang and dominates the surrounding landscape — remote, rarely visited, and still not part of any established trekking circuit.

Patamona-Led Expedition

The route depends on Patamona guides from Kopinang whose knowledge of the mountain, forest, ridges, and access routes makes the expedition possible. This is not imported adventure tourism. It is Indigenous-led mountain travel.

A True Summit Attempt

The objective is to attempt the ascent of Wokomung Tepui, but summit success cannot be guaranteed. Terrain, weather, safety, and guide assessment determine what is possible. That uncertainty is part of the expedition, not a weakness in it.

Heavy Load, Real Conditions

Participants must be ready to carry approximately 23–26 kg through steep jungle terrain and mountain forest. Camps are basic, movement is slow, and every person contributes to the daily rhythm of the team.

Plateau Exploration

If summit access is not achievable, the expedition may redirect toward plateau exploration, route documentation, and investigation of surrounding highland features. The mountain offers more than one objective.

Kopinang Mountain Base

The expedition begins and ends in Kopinang, a remote Patamona village beneath Wokomung. Time in the village gives context to the mountain, the people, and the landscape before the team moves into the forest.

Highlights

A glimpse into the terrain, culture, and expedition moments that define this journey.

Fly Into Kopinang

Reach one of Guyana’s most remote mountain villages by domestic aircraft, landing beneath the shadow of Wokomung before preparing packs and entering the forest.

Trek the Pakaraimas

Move through dense primary rainforest, ridgelines, steep slopes, and highland terrain in one of South America’s least visited mountain environments.

Attempt Wokomung Tepui

Work with Patamona guides to identify a safe route toward the summit or upper plateau. The objective is clear, but the mountain decides how far the team can go.

Camp Below the Mountain

Sleep in hammock camps deep in the forest, manage camp routines, carry your own gear, and operate as part of a small expedition team.

This is not a classroom course. Throughout the expedition, participants will use and develop real field skills in a demanding mountain and rainforest environment. You will carry a full expedition rucksack, set up hammock and tarp camps, manage your personal equipment in wet conditions, and learn how to move safely through dense jungle using proper machete awareness and trail discipline. Daily life on the expedition requires good camp hygiene, careful water management, and the ability to work as part of a small team. You will be moving through steep, uneven terrain where weather, route conditions, and guide decisions may change the plan from day to day. Because of this, flexibility and patience are just as important as physical strength. The journey also teaches low-impact travel through remote Indigenous territory, with respect for the land, the guides, and the communities who make the expedition possible. More than anything, this expedition develops resilience, teamwork, and calm decision-making under real expedition conditions.
This is a remote mountain expedition, and flexibility is essential. Domestic flights into Kopinang are weather-dependent, and mountain conditions can change quickly. Participants should avoid tight international connections immediately after the expedition. A very good level of physical fitness is required. Participants must be capable of carrying approximately 23–26 kg over steep, uneven jungle terrain for multiple days. This is not suitable for guests looking for a light trekking holiday. All participants must hold comprehensive personal travel and medical insurance that covers remote expedition activities. Global Rescue medical evacuation membership is also required for the duration of the expedition. Domestic flight luggage allowance is limited, so packing discipline is important. A full packing list and equipment guidance will be provided after booking.
